GMO’s have been under silent controversy for years, it has only been in the past few years that those 3 letters have started to become a household name. Here in America the GMO debate has gone from a Federal issue to a State to State issue. Big companies are fighting against GMO labeling on products and individuals are fighting for the ‘right to know’.

GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organisms that are genetically engineered by scientists through splicing two or more DNA species and merging them together to see what the end result is. According to the non GMO Project, “This experimental technology merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.”

GMO FACTS

• There has been very minimal testing done on the short or long term effects of GMO consumption and the human body; though several studies performed on rats and pigs has been proving to cause a myriad of illnesses; cancer, tumors, sterilization and serious intestinal issues.
• Over 70 countries worldwide have banned the selling or growing of GMO’s; Mexico becoming the most recent country to ban the planting of GMO corn crops.
• 85% of U.S. corn sold is GMO
• 91% of U.S. soybeans sold are GMO
• 88% of U.S. cotton sold is GMO

The Non GMO Project is the biggest and best certification available today to companies who want their products verified as non-GMO.

The price of verification depends on the number of products and the type of ingredients; high risk and low risk. If you would like to more information, you can send an email to the Non GMO Project and they will explain more in detail.

The approximate time of verification takes about 4-6 months and once you have qualified, Non GMO Project will send you their verified seal.

TIPS For Buying Non-GMO Products

• Buy organic when you can to reduce GMO pesticides on produce and GMO ingredients in packaged products.
• Become a label reader and look for non-GMO labels and high-risk ingredients on the top 10 list.
• The FDA earlier this year okayed the use of GMO salmon for human consumption, so make sure salmon is wild-caught.
• Avoid meats, poultry, dairy products and eggs that have been fed with GMO materials like corn.
• Support companies who make the effort to use higher quality ingredients and are non-GMO certified.
