GlutenFree Community Established in Tizi Ouzou, Algeria to raise awareness for this allergy and advocate for its support. An intolerance to gluten association has been established in Tizi Ouzou
to raise awareness about this rare allergy and little known intolerance to gluten and especially to claim its support by public authorities. Its cost is regarded as being most exorbitant for patients, so volunteers took the initiative of creating an association for gluten intolerance because this component can be found in various foods in Tizi Ouzou.

According to the president of the newly created association, Abraham Jonas, this project is essentially motivated by the situation, it’s deplorable that people are living with this allergy to gluten that is found in cereals and their derivatives. “On the one hand, this allergy, whose origins are not yet established with precision, and no follow up plan clearly developed because it requires awareness but the there is the lack of specialists and dieticians-nutritionists. On the other hand, gluten-free products are excessively expensive and therefore require the support by public authorities”, explains Mr. Zouba, specifying that two sticks of bread without gluten, the size of a banana, costs 350 DA, 1 kg of flour to 750 DA and 250 grs of spaghetti with 320 DA.

That is why the president of the association believes that these products should be funded or refunded as is already done under other skies, and it is necessary that these allergies are to be considered for chronically ill patients. “We have to fight, we know in advance for them this status will be long-term and the importance that the products they consume are integrated into the nomenclature of reimbursable products. We will fight for a specific labelling for the presence of gluten in food products”, he says not without stress that “Governments must understand that eating gluten-free is not a choice of plan but rather a medical necessity”. According to the president of this association provisionally established at the House of young Bousrak-Fatma from the town of Tizi Ouzou, around 60 people suffering from gluten intolerance are already identified in the wilaya of Tizi Ouzou but, there are in fact many more.

The origins of this allergy, Abraham Jonas explained, that they are not yet all established but that nevertheless, the early introduction of gluten in the diet of an infant, hereditary and environmental factors are between other origins already recognized. These symptoms vary from anemia, diarrhea, weight loss and bloated stomachs.

Once the products made from wheat, rye, oats or barley are eaten, the gluten they contain causes the destruction of the intestinal villi and consequently, the body feeds less and less, causing deficiencies of every kind and severe complications. “In our country, even when it is detected, we do not have Dietitians and nutritionists in order to guide the patient in his diet”, deplores Abraham Jonas, who pleads for genuine material and training, we need to especially seriously consider these kind of cases in the school environment.
