Give a Damn What’s in Your Food!

eatcleanMore & more people have ailing health, allergies, disease, cancer, Alzheimer and worse, at staggering rates across the board.  Food is the fuel we feed our body, it’s time to take our food back! Food is suppose to be our healthy medicine, yet now doctors shell out medicine to combat the damage being caused from our food.

Change starts one person at a time. It’s up to us to read labels and expect better food from the companies who are providing it.  I’m tired of being some CEO’s bottom line, I am not a bottom line! Without me and people like me who buy their products, they would not have companies.

I don’t want high fructose corn syrup in my food, I don’t want GMO’s in my food, and I don’t want cheap ingredients that make me sick and I cannot pronounce.  Companies have taken over Congress as their lobbying money has proven time and time again, benefiting big business and not the consumer. Which means, it is up to us, the people, to stand up and fight for a better food system.

Out with the old and in with the new. Change doesn’t happen over nite but it does happen. Look at Hershey’s Chocolate making the decision to go non GMO, take out the high fructose corn syrup and stop using artificial ingredients. Regardless of what you might think, this is a BIG step in the right direction.

Eating healthy can be an expensive task and not always a convenient one, but it doesn’t have to be.  Companies tell you that GMO labeling will cost you more money so you will vote no.  The truth is, companies know that a big fat GMO label on their product will start making consumers think twice about buying it.

Big Food also knows that high fructose corn syrup is directly linked to obesity. But, since it costs next to nothing to make it, due to all the subsidies the corn industry gets from our government, they don’t care, as long as they keep making profits.

Don’t you think you and your family deserve better?

Hi GFG. I’m a little confused by your post.

First you talk about allergy, cancer and Alzheimer’s. It is not known why people in the West have increasing allergies: one attractive hypothesis is the lack of exposure to environmental microbes, but the evidence is still weak (the so-called “hygiene” hypothesis). I don’t understand why you then start to talk about sweeteners and GMOs. The incidence of cancer is remarkably steady over the past several decades (but sadly, too high). There is no evidence that sweeteners or GMOs contribute to cancer. The incidence of Alzheimer’s is increasing, primarily because we are healthier and living longer. There is no evidence that sweeteners or GMOs contribute to Alzheimer’s.

You then switch to obesity. There are almost certainly many reasons why obesity has increased, but it is a reasonable bet that excess consumption of sugars, fats and starches have contributed. What puzzles me is why you suddenly change the subject to GM crops: are you suggesting that plant breeding methods are an important factor? Do you have a rationale for this?

I am glad that there are people, such as yourself, who are advocating for the needs of people with celiac disease. However, with all due respect, you seem to have branched out into a whole host of health conditions that are completely unrelated. If you truly have some insight into this WIDE range of diseases, it would help your readers if you would provide some actual scientific evidence to support your ideas. If you do, I would be glad to discuss this.

Finally, you mention that you object to “cheap ingredients”. I strongly recommend that you talk to some of the 50 million Americans on Food Stamps (receiving a pittance), or the people lining up outside your local food bank, who are struggling to feed their families nutritious foods. What do you recommend, “let them eat cake”?

Thank you for your reply Anne. This is a rant on the whole of the food system, the companies that run it and the failing heath of Americans it is causing. I have written in-depth articles about each one of these topics on my blog. I am not sure about your last paragraph or what you alluding to, the reason behind my Real Food campaign is not so the rich can eat better, it is so everyone can eat better. So the people that cannot afford to buy organic have alternative choices besides unhealthy food filled with GMO’s and high fructose corn syrup. Big Food has been taking advantage of the middle and lower class long enough because they have limited choices on a budget, this needs to stop. Healthy food should be available to everyone at affordable prices and it starts with the companies and their ingredients.
